Participation in DARPA's SDR Hackfest

by Adam Cabe

Parsons' Federal Cyber team participated at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Software Defined Radio (SDR) Hackfest to Explore Cyber-Physical Intersection of SDR and Drone Technology on November 13 – 17, 2017, in NASA Ames, Moffett Field, CA. Parsons was one of only eight teams in the United States selected to compete. The team's challenge was to communicate and control a drone at extended distances by transferring data through one drone to another. Each team was provided with a 3DR Solo drone that includes an integrated SDR and a Raspberry Pi 3. Parsons successfully used the SDR and Raspberry Pi to establish reliable communication links using open source tools, including GNU Radio and MAVLink. With this communication channel, the team communicated with and flew its drone and then established communication with and flew a second drone at extended range. We are continuing work on the project so please contact us if you are interested!
